Ghana drop in latest FIFA ranking

Ghana slipped to the seventh position on the continent in the latest FIFA Coca Cola ranking relased on Thursday.

Their slip could be attributed to the Black Stars’ shambolic performance at the just-ended Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Despite slipping on the continent, the Black Stars maintained their 50th spot on the globe as they managed to garner 1429 points from their previous 1423.

Africa Cup of Nations champions, Algeria, made a significant leap in the ranking but was not enough to put them at the summit as the moved from 12th position to fourth while silver medalist, Senegal maintained their position as the best team on the continent with 1550.

The North African champions were the biggest gainers on the continent moving 28 places from their previous world ranking from 68th to 40th of followed by Nigeria and Madagascar who moved 12 places each before Egypt moved nine places to the sixth position.

Continental heavyweights, Cameroun dropped two places to the eighth position having exited the continental football tournament in Round 16 stage, while bronze medalists, Nigeria remain third in Africa, accruing 1481 points.

Other major surprises were former champions, Cote d’Ivoire and South Africa who now occupy the 10th and 13th spots respectively despite making some gains from their previous rankings due to their performance at the AFCON tournament.

DR Congo is ranked on the ninth position ahead of Cote d’Ivoire while Mali and Burkina Faso are ranked better than the Bafana Bafana who were eliminated at the quarter final of the AFCON competition.

On the World stage, there was a single change among the top four countries in the world with France making way for Brazil at the second position following their triumph in the just ended Copa America tournament.

The current World Champions have dropped to third with England still maintaining their fourth position after winning bronze in the inaugural Nations League tournament.
