Black Stars’ general captain, Asamoah Gyan, has been tipped to play a major role in Ghana’s fifth Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) agenda at Egypt 2019.
The Kayserispor striker needed only 20 minutes to convince the Stars’ handlers of his readiness to carry the team on his shoulders again in his seventh AFCON appearance.
In a post-match chat with Graphic Sports Online, Black Stars assistant coach revealed that Gyan’s performance against South Africa last Saturday proved that he still had something to help Ghana’s campaign in Egypt.
Though the game ended goalless, the former Stars skipper showed glimpses of his former self and nearly scored with a header.
“We introduced Gyan in the 70th minute and he showed that he could be of help to us,” Coach Tanko stated.
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer, is expected to carry the Black Stars on his shoulders as a veteran in his last AFCON in Egypt.
Coach Tanko described the two friendlies against Namibia and South Africa as a good exercise for the team.
He noted that two young strikers, Caleb Ekuban and Kwabena Owusu, who are also new in the team, were doing well.
“In all, it was a good exercise for us. Now, we have a few days to polish our mistakes and fly to Egypt,” he added.
The Stars are scheduled to leave Dubai for Egypt on Thursday ahead of the big kick-off of the Egypt 2019 tournament on Friday.
