Black Stars head coach, Kwesi Appiah, has given his reasons for the lack of local players in the Ghana squad he called up for the match against Egypt in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

The match was played on Sunday at the Cape Coast and it ended 1-1 with goals coming from Mahmoud Shikabala for Egypt and Edwin Gyasi for Ghana.

After the match, Appiah faced questions from journalists on why no player from the Ghana Premier League was given a place in the team for the final qualifier which was not going to have any impact on the group in terms of qualifying for the World Cup.

“When we talk of giving local players the chance, there is no coach who has done better than I have. I always give the local players the opportunity and I have made sure that I encourage them.

However, for this match, I realised that the Ghana Premier League would ended two weeks before the tie. So, I thought that with the qualifying ending, I should call up foreign-based players who I want to assess.

Next year, I will only depend on very few players who are doing well. The mass call-ups will end this year and so, I had to look at other players.”
