Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi and First Lady Neo Masisi bought 200 new 10 pula notes bearing his portrait in Gaborone on Tuesday.

“I just come here to change and get some new notes, it is the first time we owned them and we will cherish them,” said Masisi in an interview after buying the new banknotes.

It is a Botswana tradition to print the sitting head of state’s portrait on the 10 pula note. However, affected by COVID-19, the new edition of 10 pula note was issued into circulation on February 22, almost three years after Masisi was elected to the presidency.

Masisi is the eighth Motswana to appear on the Botswana banknote since Pula day on August 23, 1976.
