Ivory Coast was the second African country to receive coronavirus vaccines from the COVAX facility but they are the first to begin a rollout campaign three days after receiving the doses.

Healthcare workers in the capital Abidjan will be the first to be vaccinated as the campaign kicks off on Monday.

The West African country received 500,000 doses of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine, 100,000 lesser than Ghana received in mid-week last week.

Over in Ghana, the president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his spouse were the first to receive their first shots at the 37 Military Hospital located in the capital, Accra.

Nigeria is the other African country expected to receive vaccines tomorrow. They are in line to receive 3.92 million doses of the vaccine.

UN-backed Covax facility is a global vaccine sharing platform meant to assist poorer countries control the pandemic. It is the biggest vaccine procurement plan in history, designed to distribute two billion doses by the end of this year.

Aside the COVAX platform, the AU's African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team, AVATT; is another avenue countries are using to secure doses. Other countries are using bilateral arrangements to purchase directly from manufacturers.
