Mali junta orders French ambassador to leave in 72 hours

The military junta in Mali has ordered the French ambassador in the country to leave in the next 72 hours, global news agencies have reported.

The ambassador has been declared "persona non grata" over comments by French authorities to the transitional government led by Col. Assimi Goita.

This marks the latest episode in tensions between the West African nation and Paris on recent years.

Mali recently engaged in a diplomatic tiff with France over reported use of Russian mercenaries in its fight against terrorism.

Pro-coup protesters after the ouster of Ibrahim Boubakar Keita in 2020, waved Russian flags and placards calling out the French government.

Mali is currently suspended from regional and continental blocs, ECOWAS and AU, as a result of the coup that brought Goita to power.

Guinea and Burkina Faso as the other West African countries suspended from both blocs as a result of coups.
