South Africa FA settles on Benni McCarthy as next head coach of Bafana Bafana

The South Africa Football Association (SAFA) has settled on legendary striker Benni McCarthy as new head coach of the national team.

The 43-year-old will be replacing Molefi Ntseki who was sacked about a month ago after failing to qualify the Bafana Bafana to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

Another legend in Siyabonga Nomvethe will be his assistant while former national team goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs will be the goalkeepers' coach.

The former FC Porto striker will begin work on 29 May 2021 as the Bafana Bafana prepare for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

They are grouped with Zimbabwe, Ghana and Ethiopia.

McCarthy is the all-time top scorer of the South Africa national team with 31 goals.

He has previously handled South Africa Premier League side Cape Town City FC from June 2017 to November 2019.

The former Blackburn Rovers center forward is currently the head coach of AmaZulu FC where he was in appointed in December 2020.

AmaZulu are currently leading the South Africa Premier League table with 50 points from 26 matches.
