GAA Circuit: Kwame Adjei upsets Malik Yakubu to win 10,000m final

Kwame Adjei has caused a major upset at the ongoing Ghana Athletics Association Circuit Championship in Sekondi by beating defending champion Malik Yakubu to win the 10,000m final.

Kwame beat favourite Malik Yakubu to first place, crossing the finish line in 31minutes:46.19 while Malik Yakubu took second place in 31minutes: 46.30.

The 18-year old new champion who was overwhelmed with his feat revealed how he has prepared for so many month for the event. Kwame added that he has been training with Malik since both if them are based in Kumasi and knew the weaknesses of Malik, hence capitalising on that.

"We train together. Malik is more like my boss so beating him feels really great. Now that I'm the champion, I plan to keep this title for a long time," Kwame told the media.

Was he expecting to win? "Yes, training with him for so long exposed his weaknesses to me which I exploited," he added.

The Circuit Championship, the first in 2018, which appears like Ghana's version of the Diamond League is aimed at identifying athletes and preparing them for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.
