Two hundred and seventy-nine (279) students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) have received a scholarship package under the Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship Fund (VCSF).

This was made known at a brief presentation ceremony held at the Registrar’s Conference Room, UEW, Winneba.

The total scholarship package for the 2018/19 academic year was GHC279,000.00. Each of the recipients received GHC1,000.00 and is eligible to apply for renewal the following academic year, provided s/he is able to maintain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.5.

The initiative was recently instituted by the University to reduce the financial burden of needy brilliant students. This is to enable such students to continue to access quality education from the University.

The VCSF is solely funded by the University and opened to all needy brilliant Ghanaian students pursuing undergraduate programmes at the University.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Prof. Dominic Mensah, Chairman of the VCSF, was full of gratitude to the University Management for opening up the Fund to cover many more applicants.

He averred that with the magnanimity of Management, the number of beneficiaries had seen a quantum growth from 120 to 279 in the 2018/19 academic year. He said that the growth in numbers of beneficiaries represented a 129% increase.

Prof. Mensah explained that the VCSF Board had observed that some students with potentials but faced with financial challenges were forced by their circumstances to either defer their programmes or drop out altogether.

He added that this prompted the Board to prevail on the Management of the University to increase the package. The rationale behind the move was to make it accessible to many more qualified applicants. The appeal yielded results with a significant increase in the number of beneficiaries as seen today at the ceremony.

Prof. Mensah charged the beneficiaries to work extra hard not just to justify the investment the University is making in them, but to also meet the minimum CGPA of 2.5 so that, they could be maintained on the VCSF.

Some of the obviously elated beneficiaries who spoke at the ceremony expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor and the Management of the University for coming to their aid at this critical time in their lives. They pledged to be worthy beneficiaries of the scholarship and to work even harder to be maintained on the VCSF
