Azumah Nelson stages first promotion Saturday
Boxing legend Azumah Nelson will make his first foray as a boxing promoter when he stages the first edition of the Azumah Nelson Fight Night series which will see Abraham Osei Bonsu put his national Superfeatherweight Championship belt on the line against Patrick Ayi on Saturday at the Bukom Arena.
The Azumah Nelson Fight Night is a spin-off of his successful collaboration with New Zealand promoter Heta Mann which came to an end earlier this year.
At a press briefing yesterday after the ten boxers on the bill successfully tipped the scales, Nelson (who turned 60 years on Thursday) said setting up a boxing promotion syndicate was his way of giving back to the sport that made him a legend.
According to him, boxing made him a national hero and it was only right that he uses his influence to support and groom the next generation of Ghanaian pugilists.
He entreated all the boxers to be disciplined and treat all spectators who come to the arena to the best of boxing skills.
A total on five enthralling bouts will be witnessed with Bonsu alias No Shaking and Ayi alias (Alligator) clashing in the headline bout while Benjamin Lamptey (Daddy Lumba) and Sherif Quaye (One Time) will also square off for the National Lightweight Championship and Michael Ansah (One Bullet) will face off with Isaac Dowuana (Zongo Fire) in the final eliminator for the National Super featherweight title.
In other clashes, WBA super featherweight champion Wahab Oluwaseun (Seunzy) will take on Togolese Mouibi Sarouna (Togo Warrior) in the International Super featherweight contest and Emmanuel Danso (Kwahu Tyson) will battle Stephen Abbey (Anero) in a Super Middleweight contest.
Nelson is also expected to be honoured by the World Boxing Council for his contributions to the sport at the event.
