Two female boxers for African Games

Ghana will present two female boxers out of 10 sanctioned fighters to compete at the upcoming African Games in Rabat, Morocco, from August 16 to September 1.

According to the coach of the national amateur boxing team, Black Bombers, Ofori Asare, US-based female boxer, Ornella Sathoul and Abigail Quartey would represent the country at the Games that would bring the rest of Africa together to compete in the various sporting disciplines.

Coach Asare explained that he decided to present eight male boxers for the continental sporting festival to allow for gender balance which would give the ladies the opportunity to showcase their talent, especially as Ghana plans to host the next edition of the African Games in 2023.

He told the Daily Graphic in an interview that the likes of Wahid Omar, Jessie Lartey, David Bawa and others would compete for Team Ghana during the 12th edition of the African Games.

“We have been given a quota to take 10 boxers to this year’s Games so we decided to include two female fighters in order to allow gender balance and also give them the opportunity to showcase their talent.

“The other eight boxers are male fighters whom we believe will make a significant impact at the Games when they participate,” Coach Asare said.

Team Ghana is expected to win laurels for the country in boxing, with Lartey, a Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, African and Commonwealth Games bronze medalist in Omar and Bawa, a three-times African Games bronze medalist all set to partake in the competition.

The Bombers have been training since December last year to ensure adequate preparation for the Games, but Coach Asare lamented over the decision to embark on a non-residential camping instead of residential camping, which he said, could have provided them better preparation.

When asked whether he believed the non-residential training could affect their medal chances, Coach Asare said he was hopeful of a better performance at the Games.
