Cheers and applause greeted a 95-year-old war veteran as he finished what is the first of a seven-day walk aimed at raising funds for coronavirus charity works.

The target is to complete 14 miles and raise as much as $600,000 to support frontline staff and fellow veterans across the continent.

The journey began this morning with Private Joseph Hammond completing a two-mile walk through some principal streets of Accra.

After gulping down water to quench his obvious thirst upon completion of the day’s walk, the World War II veteran in his drenched outfit which was decorated with his medals said “Glory to the Lord. I feel perfect and everything is nice. I’m still very strong and I can walk again but because we have scheduled this thing for seven days, I will be doing it until I conclude the whole program.”

Before embarking on the 2-mile walk, Private Hammond made a statement which basically sums up the objective of his highly commendable exercise.

“I see many people donating and I’m asking everybody your little bit. Little water makes a mighty ocean so all of you must endeavor to do it. I’m doing this thing specially for the whole of Africa”, he remarked.
