The introduction of electric vehicles in Ghana is gaining momentum, with the government recently announcing plans to procure a number of EVs to enhance public transport operations in the country.

The primary goal of this move by government is to reduce public transportation costs by at least 40% while also aligning with best environmental practices to reduce emissions.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has confirmed that estimates for the electric vehicles have been finalised, with their arrival expected by December of this year.

Despite concerns about the reliance on fossil fuels, particularly in Sub-Saharan countries, the adoption of EVs has been steadily increasing in popularity over the past few years as a greener alternative to traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.

In addition to being a great option for public and individual transport services, EVs offer a variety of benefits.

Here are five benefits of adopting electric vehicles for public transport:

1. Reduced emissions and improved air quality:

One major benefit of adopting EVs is that they produce zero emissions, unlike traditional vehicles that emit harmful gases contributing to air pollution. This is crucial for reducing the risk of respiratory diseases and other health complications caused by air pollution.

Additionally, EVs can improve air quality and minimize the environmental impact of transportation.

2. Lower operating costs:

Operating EVs can be more cost-effective compared to traditional vehicles, as they require less maintenance and have fewer components that need replacement or repair.

This can help public transport operators save on fuel and maintenance costs, enabling them to enhance public transport services.

Passengers riding public EVs may also benefit from reduced fares, as EVs have proven to be a cost-effective option.

3. Improved accessibility

Electric vehicles have been designed with improved accessibility in mind, making them a suitable alternative for public transportation. For instance, most EVs are equipped with ramps or lifts to assist passengers with disabilities or mobility issues.

Also, EVs offer more space and wider doors to accommodate passengers of all kinds.

4. Reduced dependence on fossil fuels

In countries like Ghana, EVs can provide a unique alternative for public transport, as power can be

generated from renewable sources such as solar or wind power.

This allows public transport operators to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, contributing to a more environmentally sustainable future and helping achieve SDG targets while reducing the impact of climate change for future generations.

5. Quieter operation

EVs are designed to produce less noise compared to traditional vehicles, making them an ideal and comfortable choice for public transport, especially in densely populated urban areas in Ghana.

This quieter operation provides a more comfortable journey for public transport commuters, free from noise pollution.

Subsequently, the smoother features of EVs, such as acceleration and braking, can also help reduce the impact of motion sickness and among others.

Conclusion

Electric vehicles offer numerous benefits for public transport systems, making them an increasingly attractive option for operators and passengers.

As public transport systems transition to EVs, we can anticipate a greener, more efficient, and more accessible future for urban mobility in the coming years.
