AU Day: Coronavirus has underscored the need for global assistance to African countries – MFA

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has reiterated the need for global aid to third world countries – mostly on the African continent, in the wake of the deadly coronavirus.

According to the Ministry, the coronavirus pandemic has elucidated the African continent to their flaws in the health and economic sectors, adding that there is the need to strengthen those sectors.

In a press statement to mark the African Union Day today, May 25, they stated, “Nonetheless, the unprecedented effects of the covid-19 pandemic have underscored the need for a collective and coordinated global response to assist the world’s most vulnerable countries to mitigate the harsh economic and financial effects of the pandemic,” parts of the statement read.

“The pandemic and its economic fallout highlights the longer-term effort needed to strengthen the health systems, diversify economy and broaden domestic revenue sources of African countries.”

The Ministry however uncloaked the efforts of African leaders to boost the economy of Africa to world-class standards.

“African leaders are deploying targeted efforts to put the continent on an enviable pedestal of economic growth and prosperity. The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) is one of such efforts by African leaders”
