Agriculture Minister, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto has posited that the prices of food have declined due to the implementation of scientific technology under the Akufo-Addo administration.
Giving his remarks at the signing of the Ghana Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa (S3A) Wednesday, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto claimed that the reduction in the prices of food commodities on the Ghanaian market is a historical feat of the NPP government.
“We are already implementing science in agriculture under the able leadership of our president Akufo-Addo and that is already beginning to show results. Ghanaian consumers of food in the urban areas and in our cities have never seen such low prices of food around the country,” he stated.
The Agriculture Minister added that the provision of improved seeds to 200,000 Ghanaian farmers was very instrumental in the low food prices across the nation.
“You just have to step out into the streets of Accra, to the markets in Takoradi, Kumasi, Tamale to believe what I’m saying. It is a common knowledge that just selecting and providing these improved seeds to only 200,000 out of our 5 million farmers has brought about this kind of transformation,” he said.
The Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI) in collaboration with the Agriculture Ministry and the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) signed an agreement on the Ghana Science Agenda for Agriculture in Africa (S3A), on Wednesday, November 14 in Accra, as part of the Malabo commitments.
The S3A would ensure the application of science for the transformation of agriculture in Africa as a means of inclusive sustainable growth, shared prosperity and poverty reduction.
