The outgone Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, should have been removed from office President Nana Akufo-Addo a long time ago, Major Osahene Kojo Boakye-Djan (retired), a spokesperson for the defunct Ghana Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC), has said.

He explained that Mr Asante-Apeatu’s age was a disadvantage, hence, in the retired military officer’s view, his failure as IGP.

Mr Boakye-Djan also said some of the security-related policies implemented by the Akufo-Addo administration have been poor.

To that end, he called on the government to review the policies in the security sector to ensure that the personnel delivers.

“I think the removal of the IGP was long overdue, he should have been removed long ago”, he told Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra100.5FM on Tuesday, 23 July.

“His age was not going to permit him to do the work. I told him when he was appointed that he could not do the work because of his age”, Mr Boakye-Djan added.

“The problem with our security is not the personnel, it is the polices that are being implemented by this government. The government must review those policies and allow the men to work effectively.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Monday, 22 July 2019 directed Mr Asante-Apeatu to “proceed on leave with immediate effect” pending his retirement from the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, 14 August 2019.

The president thanked him for his many years of service to the country and wished him well in his retirement.

Nana Akufo-Addo has asked the Deputy IGP, Mr James Oppong-Boanuh to act as IGP until a substantive IGP is appointed in accordance with the constitution.
