Chinese, French, and Russian firms compete to build Ghana’s first nuclear power plant – Report

France's EDF, U.S.-based NuScale Power, Regnum Technology Group, China National Nuclear Corporation, South Korea's Kepco and its subsidiary Korea Hydro Nuclear Power Corporation, as well as Russia's ROSATOM, are all competing for the contract to build Ghana's inaugural nuclear power plant over the next decade.

A report published by Reuters and sighted by GhanaWeb Business indicates that by December 2024, the Ghanaian government will select an energy firm to undertake the project.

"Cabinet will approve the final choice. It can be one vendor or two nations; it will depend on the financial model and the technical details," Deputy Director for Power in charge of Nuclear and Alternative Energy, Robert Sogbadji told Reuters.

Sogbadji mentioned that some 16 countries and companies responded to the government's request for vendors, but a technical team led by state agencies within the Energy Ministry narrowed it down to the current five nations.

Ghana's ambition to establish a nuclear power plant dates back to the early 1960s, but plans were delayed due to a series of coups that disrupted democracy.

The plan was rekindled in 2006 with assistance from the International Atomic Energy Association following a severe power crisis that year.
