Former president John Mahama has called on the government to compel the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to give out a percentage of contributions to workers to alleviate their plight during the COVID-19 fight.

Interacting with Ghanaians in a Facebook Live session on Thursday, Mr. Mahama said “SSNIT must help contributors in times of adversity such as this.”

According to him, social security contributions “are essentially an insurance scheme made not just for pensions in old age before we die.”

Also, he served notice to the administrators of government’s COVID-19 Trust Fund to keep receipts of expenditure because a day of reckoning will come.

“I don’t think I need to become President before we demand accountability. All those spending the COVID-19 money should be keeping the receipts because the day of accountability is fast approaching,” he said.

The Trust Fund has accrued over GhS8 million. The number of COVID-19 cases recorded in Ghana now stand at 1,154 with 120 recoveries and nine deaths.
