Govt was right in its termination of PDS concession – Ursula Owusu

Minister for Communications, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has said the government has done no wrong in terminating its concession agreement with Power Distribution Service (PDS) Ghana Limited.

She explained that the entry of the government into the power compact was well-intended as there were some major issues at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that needed to be fixed.

However, the government could not have sat down unconcerned when it realized there were problems with the necessary requirements for the concession agreement to work effectively.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, monitored by Adomonline.com, she said the government did not oversee the procurement process, explaining that the government only observed the process as a key stakeholder.

“Government did not oversee the procurement process; the [procurement] process was done by the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) and the US government with the government as a key stakeholder observing more or less. The government was mainly interested in the shareholding aspect,” she said.

The minister said the government’s termination of the concession agreement was a step taken to protect the state’s assets.

She advised Ghanaians not to be too suspicious of the move because government has the country at heart.
