Greater Accra, Kumasi cleanup exercise begins today – Sanitation Minister

As part of measures to mitigate the dire consequences of the rapid spread of coronavirus, the Sanitation Ministry together with the various assemblies of areas under partial lockdown will today commence a cleanup exercise.

According to the Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah, the initiative is to help eradicate the scourge of the deadly Coronavirus.

While addressing Ghanaians at the Minister’s press briefing, April 3, 2020, at the Information Ministry, she charged various Municipal Chief Executives to lead their teams to conduct the cleanup exercise in their areas.

She also noted that the exercise which will begin in a few hours will be led by the Mayor of Accra in the Accra Central Business District.

The Sanitation Minister also noted that the various leaders of the cleanup exercise to use the opportunity to educate Ghanaians about the safety precautionary measures.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on March 27, 2020, announced a lockdown of some parts of the country for two weeks effective dawn of Monday, March 30, 2020.

The affected cities like Accra, Kumasi, and Tema.

“People in the affected areas must stay at home in the next two weeks. If you must go out, it should be to get essentials, go to the bank or to use a public toilet,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He also said only essential service providers and persons involved in the food value chain are exempted from the lockdown.
