Efforts of the personnel of the Asuogyaman District Health Directorate in the Eastern Region at combating the coronavirus have been boosted after it took delivery of 200 boxes (4800 bottles) of hand sanitizers.

The sanitizers were presented by the Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Exim Bank and former NPP parliamentary candidate for Asuogyaman, Kwame Adu-Darkwa at the forecourts of the Asuogyaman District Assembly on Saturday, April 4, 2020.

The items were presented to the directorate through the District Chief Executive for the Asuogyaman District Assembly, Samuel Kwame Agyekum who handed it over to the District Director of Health Services, Mr. Abdul Aziz.

Mr. Adu Darkwa who described the gesture as his “first step” towards supporting the combat against covid19 explained that it was part of his contribution to fighting the COVID-19 pandemic to be distributed to various households in the Asuogyaman District.

The Exim Bank boss urged all and sundry to adhere to the recommended safety measures to avoid contracting the disease.

He praised President Akuffo Addo’s efforts aimed at curbing the disease, arguing that his steps had been proactive.

Comparing the President’s “quick response” to the “lackadaisical approach” by some Western countries which has resulted in thousands of cases and deaths, the former NPP parliamentary candidate said the timely intervention by government made the difference in the relatively low numbers recorded in the country.

District Chief Executive for Asuogyaman, Samuel Kwame Agyekum thanked Mr. Adu Darkwa profusely for his assistance towards the efforts of the assembly and the District Health Directorate, adding that the gesture will go a long way to support their work.

District Director of Health Services, Mr. Abdul Aziz who received the items hailed Mr. Kwame Adu Darkwa on his support and urged others to emulate him.

He however appealed to the government and the kind public to come to their aid with enough personal protection equipment (PPE) to enable them to efficiently deal with suspected COVID-19 cases without fear of contracting the virus.

The director lamented that frontline personnel were going through difficulties as the pandemic persisted.

He indicated that health facilities in the area were in dire need of PPE and other support mechanisms to enable them function effectively, fearing that health workers could contract the virus and infect members of their families because they did not have adequate PPE?to work with.

Mr. Aziz therefore, urged the authorities to take a serious look at the situation to ensure that the right things were done adding that while helping to save lives, it was incumbent on the State to also put in place the necessary measures to safeguard their health and wellbeing.

Meanwhile, the Health Directorate together with other key stakeholders such as the District Assembly had begun intensive public sensitisation to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the Area.
