Following accusations of some MTN workers being involved in Mobile Money fraud, Senior Manager, AML Compliance & Analytics for the company, Godwin Kwami Tamakloe has revealed that no single evidence has been brought forward against any of the MTN employees.
Addressing the media in a press briefing on Thursday, October 26th, 2017, Godwin Tamakloe stated that significantly about 36 million transactions go through the platform on monthly basis and 9 million on weekly basis with 365 issues of fraud being recorded.
‘In terms of MTN employees being part of it, since we started hearing this we haven’t received any shred of evidence, no one has come up with an information relating to even a suspicion that maybe an MTN person here or there is part of that a particular suspicious transaction for us to take an action or maybe investigate”.
He added that “I can assure you that we haven’t received any evidence to that effect and there is nothing based on all the checks we have done that involve any of our employees in this issues”.
According to MTN, about 400,000 messages are blocked daily and these measures are taken to reduce the possible risk of fraud.
Also, with regards to mobile money security, MTN Ghana alighted some precautionary measures every customer should be aware of:
- Customers should desist from giving a third-party access to their transactions in other to avoid being victims of such scam
- Desist from entertaining phone calls or messages after transactions.
- Do not disclose PIN to anyone.
