It is contrary to Capitalist notions to have State Enterprises but our continued experience with the corruption embedded in our divestiture implementation demands that, at least, certain Enterprises are kept under State ownership for a much longer. Such would include our Utility Companies.
Nevertheless, if that were to happen, we would need a whole new revamped strategy to run those Companies to let them FULLY follow Capitalist principles.
If I had my way, however, I would want the Government retain only half of the ownership of such vital Companies, and the majority of the Board of Directors chosen by and from the private Sector that owns the other half. In that case, the private shareholders would have a bigger say in how to run the Companies to make them viable and competitive in the open Market.
There is no reason why a State Enterprise could not be profitable and subjected to the same kind of rules that govern Private Enterprises.
It must be emphasized that State Enterprises or Companies that the Government has significant ownerships in abound in Countries like Singapore, Malaysia and others where the Economies are leading the World in growth and success.
State Enterprises may therefore not be unwisely shielded from competition with private firms in the same business. Their existence would be largely to ensure that we are not undermined by others who may be wielding exclusive control of the Market. Our Economy has suffered numerous Economic sabotage by external forces and internal selfish restrictions in some firms to create artificial shortages.
The Nation would see better economic stability with the basic needs of the people ensured on the Market all the time. This also goes to bolster our National Security.

You guys are all missing the point he is making. When he says some companies should be owned by Ghanaians, it's different from the state owning it. In other words, he means Ghanaians should own the bigger shares which is the same as privatization. Please dig deeper before commenting because the comments so far sound infantile. He is not proposing state-run companies.

Socialism is not even some monster as u people would always have us believe. It is only an idea of social/economic organisation, just like capitalism or whatever. It's funny how u people talk about ideas opposed to ur own. mwai!!

Maybe at past indepence time, but today clients want service, government needs tax income and countries needs jobs. Ownership in 2015 is unimportant that's a post station in the global world

OPAYIN BAIZE,
THIS IS A GOOD POINT RAISED,AND SUCH A WISE RECOMMENDATION NEEDS TO BE INCULCATED IN THE MINDS OF THOSE, WHO HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT, EXPATRIATES ARE THE ANSWERS TO OUR ECONOMIC BACKWARDNESS,UNDEDEVELOPMENT AND EXTREME POVERTY.
IT IS STILL INDEED A PITY, GHANAIANS HAVE STILL NOT LEARNT FROM THEIR BITTER PAST, WHEN THE ARMED CRIMINALS IN MILITARY UNIFORMS THAT OVERTHREW THE LEGITIMATE GOVERNMENT OF THE CPP UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF KWAME NKRUMAH AND SUPPORTED BY EXTERNAL ENEMIES AGAINST THE DEVELOPMENT OF GHANA HAD TO COME TO ADVISE THE ILLEGAL SEMILITERATES APPOINTED TO POSITIONS AFTER THE MAD ADVENTURE IN 1966,TO GROUND ALL STATE ENTERPRISES IN THE COUNTRY.
TILL TODAY; THESE ENTERPRISES WHICH SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN TO PEOPLE WITH VISION AND KNOW-HOW AT THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO RUN THEM AND TO PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT TO THE PEOPLE OF GHANA, CONTINUE TO BE ABANDONED, AND THOSE THAT WERE GIVEN TO THE SO CALLED FOREIGN INVESTORS, JUST ONLY CAME IN TO MAKE THEIR MONEY AND TO ABANDON THEM.
WHERE ARE OUR SENSES EVEN TILL TODAY.
EXAMPLES ARE, WEST AFRICAN COCOA BUTTER PLANT IN TAKORADI, BONSA TYRE FACTORY,SALTPOND CERAMIC,ABOSO GLASS FACTORY AND COCOA PROCESSING COMPANY IN TAKORADI. ETC., ETC., ETC,.
OPAYIN, MY QUESTION IS,WHAT IS THE ESSENCE OF HAVING HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IN THE COUNTRY AND FOR PRODUCING SO CALLED GRADUATES IN MECHANCIAL AND ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND NATURAL SCIENCE PROFESSIONS FOR NON-PRODUCTIVE WORK IN GHANA.
WHOM ARE WE TO BLAME,THE PEOPLE OF GHANA OR FOREIGN INVESTORS WHO COME IN TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR STUPIDITY.
LASTLY, WHO EVER THINKS, IT IS THE FOREIGNER WHO HAS COME IN AND TO HELP US-
LIVES IN A FOOLS PARADISE.
WE STILL DO NOT KNOW OUR PAST HISTORY, DOMINATED BY SLAVE TRADE, EXPLOITATION AND PLUNDER.
LET'S RENEW FOR TIME AND TIDE WAITS FOR NO MAN IN THE 21st CENTURY.
