A ceremony has been held at Sekyere-Krobo, in the Wassa-East District, to reward hard-working farmers in the area.
A total of 128 farmers were recognized with prizes including tricycle, deep-freezer, bicycles, knapsack spraying machines, gas cylinders, wellington boots and machetes.
Sixty-eight (68)-year old Kwadwo Oteng Agyei from Mensarrom was adjudged the district best farmer of the year.
He has cultivated 230 acres of rubber trees, 52 acres of cocoa, 30 acres of pineapple, 20 acres of plantain, 12 acres of banana and 6.7 acres of coconut.
Added to these are 12 acres of cocoyam, 15 acres of maize, two acres of cassava, four acres of tomato, and one acre each of pepper and garden eggs.
He is also keeping 20 goats and 120 birds.
Madam Lucy Ackaah, 52, from Wassa-Ekutuase, emerged the district best female farmer.
Mr. Arthur Wilson, the District Chief Executive (DCE), saluted the farmers for the good job they were doing to feed the nation and to keep the economy going.
He underlined the government’s determination to transform the nation’s agriculture, to boost productivity and returns to the farmer.
He made reference to the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ), artificial pollination and the mass cocoa spraying exercise and said these were meant for just that.
The DCE announced that nurseries were going to be established to supply seedlings to the farmers.
Mr. Kofi Ayiah, the District Director of Agriculture, pledged to continue to provide them with strong extension services.
