Armed robbers terrorise Ejura-Sekyere-Odumase residents

Notorious armed robbers are terrorising residents of Ejura-Sekyere-Odumase Municipality in the Ashanti region, virtually holding the people hostage on daily basis.

The frequent robbery attacks on patrons of Ejura food market has claimed several lives with several others sustaining life-threatening bullet wounds.

Increasing insecurity situation in Ejura municipality has compelled patrons of the market to divert to Techiman market and other recognized food markets, a situation the residents describe as unfortunate and a threat to farming activities in the municipality.

Mr. Abubakar-Saddique who spoke at a news conference on behalf of the Ejura residents, called for improved security in the area to save collapsing Ejura Food Market due to operations of armed robbers.

He has also called for mass transfer of all police officers who have lived in the municipality for over five years since the residents no longer have confidence in them.

Mr. Abubakar-Saddique accused the police of failing to arrest deadly armed robbers who are terrorizing commuters, especially traders and commercial vehicle drivers.

According to him, the operations of the armed robbers are negatively affecting the health and education of the people as well as the business activities.

“The government workers who are here, especially the doctors, the nurses, the teachers and several others who work at the Municipal Assembly have threatened to leave. We can just imagine, if these essential service providers leave our community, how will our healthcare system look like? How would our children be taught in school?

“So therefore, we are calling on the President himself, Inspector General of Police, the Interior Minister….the Ashanti Regional Minister who happens to the Chairman of the regional Security Council to act,” Mr. Abubakar-Saddique appealed.

Meanwhile, the Police command in the municipality say they cannot be blamed for insecurity in the area.

The police complain about lack personnel and needed logistics to handle deadly highway armed robbers in the municipality.

Superintendent Anthony Appiah, Ejura Municipal police commander said, “Our numbers are very few, we are not even up to 50 in a metropolis where the population is about 99,000…and this is what we are going through.”
