The Minority in parliament has charged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to focus on addressing internal security lapses and stop promising to help the US fight terrorism.

Nana Akufo-Addo recently assured the Governors of the United States of America that Ghana will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the US in the fight against terrorism when he spoke at the winter meeting of the National Governors Association in the United States of America.

But Minority spokesperson on Communications, A.B.A. Fuseini wants the president to focus on fighting crime in the country in the wake of the upsurge in armed robbery, before he thinks of helping the US fight terrorism.

Speaking to Class News’ parliamentary correspondent, Ekow Annan, Mr Fuseini said: “If you haven’t been able to carry sticks, it is not wise to add logs to your load. I’m talking of even our own armed robbers, there is lawlessness in Ghana. Today, Ghanaians cannot sleep, the Ghanaian security has been compromised, people are complaining all over, armed robbers are killing people all over the place, you have not finished that one and you are going to help America fight terrorism?

“Everybody can cooperate in the fight against terrorism but don’t go and tell them as if Ghana has the capacity to help America fight terrorism when even on our own shores our own domestic crime is soaring into the high heavens… The major problem is that charity begins at home … Let us do our own thing first. You must first catch the mad man before you talk of shaving him. The president must deal with our own crime rate that has shot up into the heavens before he gives promises to Americans. His number one priority is to secure Ghanaians.”

Meanwhile, government has said it will deploy some military personnel to help the police fight robbers in the capital.

This was disclosed by the Minister of State in charge of National Security, Bryan Acheampong on the Executive Breakfast Show on Class91.3FM.

Minister for the Interior, Ambrose Dery, has also indicated that government will acquire helicopters and drones to assist in fighting crime
