PAC findings not indictment of gov't - Awuni

Koforidua, Oct. 19, GNA- Corrupt practices being exposed at the public sitting of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament is not an indictment of government but an attempt at promoting transparency in governance and checking corruption.
Head of departments and agencies who watched and head how their colleague were grilled at the sitting in the media, would be careful in the discharge of their duties, especially the disbursement of public funds.
Mr. Andrews Awuni, the Presidential Spokesman, said these at a forum organized by the Koforidua Polytechnic branch of the Tertiary Education Students Confederacy (TESCON) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), at Koforidua on Thursday.
He said until the NPP Government came to power, report of the Auditor General was never presented to parliament let alone given the opportunity to debate it.
Mr. Awuni called on party supporters to walk "chest out and with their heads raised" because the achievement of the NPP government could not be challenged by any government in the political history of the country.
He said the destiny of the country was tied to the destiny of the NPP and no government would come to replace the NPP Government in the 2008 Election.
Mr. Awuni predicted that Ghana would win the 2008 African Cup of Nations to be organised in the country next year and the NPP would take advantage of the euphoria to win the 2008 Election.
Mr Awuni said there was always the need for one generation to develop the country for other generations to enjoy. He said that responsibility had fallen on the current generation to build the country and called on the youth not to despair but to organise themselves and work hard.
Mr. Awuni said opponents of the NPP who are seeking power were not democrats but were forced by circumstances to become democrats and had nothing better to offer the country having been in government for 19 years.
He said if opponents of the NPP had any thing better to offer the country, they could have done so when they were in power and the records would be there for all to see.
Mr. Awuni said since the country had not yet attained 100 per employment rate, some youths would be without jobs until the economy expanded to accommodate them.
He, however, said the Government's Youth Employment Programme was on the right direction and the models would be increased for more youths to be engaged annually.
