Sawla Police Station attacked over arrest of NPP executive
Sticks and cutlasses–wielding youth burst into the police station at Sawla in the Northern Region on Wednesday night, attacking police officers and threatened to burn down the building after a local executive of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) was arrested and taken into custody following a confrontation, over a woman, between him and an officer.
Adamu Sakara is said to have allegedly caught a Police officer having sexual intercourse with a lady he has promised to marry, following which he incited the youth against the policeman at his private residence.
The officer sensing danger called for help and had dozens of armed policemen hurriedly storming his residence to rescue him and arrest the NPP officer. The arrest angered the youth who besieged the only police station in the area attempting to free the NPP executive.
The Police had to respond firing several warning shots and spraying pepper on the angry youth in an attempt to disperse them.
According to EIB’s Northern Regional Correspondent Eliasu Tanko, in the ensuing confrontation, the DCE for the area went to the scene to pile up pressure on the Police to release the NPP Executive.
He later fled the area when the situation got tensed.
The Police Commander, SPSK Boateng confirmed the incident, adding that the Police officer Oklu Labista who was attacked at his residence is currently receiving treatment at the Bole Government Hospital.
