Two boys, aged 16 and 24, were last Monday found guilty by a High Court in Bor town, Jonglei of killing another boy in a robbery in October last year.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Justice John Yel Aleu, the presiding judge, said the convicts are part of a gang of eight arrested by the police for killing a 17-year-old boy in Bor’s Block 3 neighbourhood last year.

Following the incident, eight murder suspects were arrested and during police investigation, five were freed and three forwarded to the court.

Justice Yel said, “Through examination and evidence provided, the court found only two of the three guilty of jointly killing the deceased. So under section 206 Penal Code Act 2008, the 24-year-old Goor has been sentenced to death by hanging, while his co-convict Kuol, 16, will serve 7 years imprisonment. He will spend two years in the reformatory center and the rest in the main prison as required by the law.”

Justice Yel, the state high court president, however, pointed out the convicts have 15 days to appeal if they are not satisfied by the ruling.

Gang violence has been rampant in parts of the Jonglei State capital, Bor over the past years.

David Garang Goc of the Jonglei Civil Society Network, welcomed the court verdict, saying convictions will help deter rampant revenge killings in the state.
