Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has given an account of how he got into the political limelight while working as the Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

Dr. Paul Amoafo Acquah who is a former Governor of BOG is among those who played key roles in persuading him to go into politics, he dropped the secret.

He revealed how he was consulted to accept to go into politics but had to discuss the issue with his immediate boss who was Dr. Acquah.

“When I was requested to come into politics, I was a bit hesitant and my initial answer was no” he stated while addressing a conference on monitoring and evaluation at the University of Ghana in Accra.

According to him, Dr. Acquah revealed that it was an opportunity for them to implement policies of the Central Bank considering his background as a banker and having work with the Bank of Ghana.

“My boss, Paul Acquah said our problems is really the politicians so I think you should get in there so you help us implement all the policies we have been recommending” he added.

Dr. Bawumia partnered then-candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in 2008, 2012 and 2016 elections on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In the run-up to the 2016 elections, he was described by a section of Ghanaians as the economic wizkid who gave the then ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration a hell of time with his public lectures on the economy culminating into the NPP’s victory.

Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2016 elections, beat then-President John Mahama by polling 5,716,026 million votes, representing 53.85%, while John Mahama polled 4,713,277 million votes representing 44.40%, the worse so far for an incumbent President.
