Ghanaian Professor installed as Principal of University of Toronto - Scarborough

A Ghanaian Professor, Wisdom Tettey, was on Tuesday, February 25, 2019 installed as the Vice President and Principal of the University of Toronto-Scarborough in the largest city of Canada.

He is the first Black person to head the campus.

His installation took place at the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto amidst academic pageantry with the blasting of Ghanaian traditional song in the background.

The ceremony was well attended by dignitaries and academia including the Vice Chancellor, academic staff, students and family members/representatives from the Toronto Ghanaian community.

According to the official publication (May, 2018) of the University of Toronto, Professor Wisdom Tettey, a political scientist who is a leading researcher on the African diaspora, politics and media, was appointed the new vice-president and principal of the University of Toronto Scarborough last year.

Tettey, who used to be the Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus, would serve a five-year term at the University of Toronto-Scarborough.

“Tettey has been at UBC’s Okanagan campus for the past seven years, initially leading the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies and then the Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences. Prior to UBC, he spent 13 years at the University of Calgary and before that was at Queen’s University, where he received his PhD in political studies and began his academic career".

Prof. Wisdom Tettey was a product of Legon before heading to Canada. The Ghanaian community in Canada and indeed, Ghanaians in Diaspora are very proud of Prof. Tettey’s lofty achievement in the academia in Canada.
