Former students of St John’s Senior High School (SHS) at Sekondi in the Western Region, known as Old Saints, will institute a scholarship scheme in honour of Major Maxwell Adam Mahama.

The scheme, called MaxMahama Scholarship, will give excellence awards to deserving students who are part of the school’s cadet.

This was disclosed by the Old Saints in their tribute to their comrade during his burial service at the forecourt of the State House in Accra on Friday, 9 June, 2017.

Major Mahama was a member of the St John’s cadet and, according to the former students, excelled in it.

According to the Old Saints, Major Mahama was a “man of peace and reasoning” that “Form 1 Saints who were hunted as preys by their seniors after lights out always found your corner as a refuge”.

The tribute further read: “The MaxMahama Scholarship Scheme that will soon be outdoored by Old Saints will give excellence awards to deserving students who were part of the school’s cadet.

“It shall also collaborate with the foundation that will be funded in your name to continually remind today’s and successive governments and Ghanaians in general that in crusading against galamsey (illegal mining), the innocent blood of a true Saint was shed, hence galamsey must indeed be buried with you. Just like our Lord Jesus Christ, may the outpouring of his precious blood forever purge Ghana of galamsey and mob injustice (lynching).”

Major Mahama was buried at the Osu military cemetery on Friday. He was lynched by a mob at Denkyira Obuasi on suspicion that he was an armed robber after a woman he bought snails from spotted a gun on him when he reached for his pocket to pay for his purchase.
