The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Kweku Baako Jnr has joined the lot speaking against the scrapping of 1st July, Republic day usually observed as a public holiday.

July 1 is no longer a public holiday following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's assent to the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2019.

A statement signed and issued by the Minister of Interior, Mr. Ambrose Dery on Wednesday, May 8 announced that President Akufo-Addo assented to the new Act on April 16, 2019.

"The President of Republic of Ghana, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assented to the Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2019, (Act 986) on 16th April 2019," it said.

However, this has been opposed by a lot of people.

According to Kweku Baako, the thought that went into making the changes is poor and that it has reduced the significance of the day.

"There was a poverty of thought . . . I have been trying to understand it; the poverty of thought was amazing . . . I can't vote for that," he indicated during a panel discussion on Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo'.

Watch the video below to learn the history of July 1st and understand why Kweku Baako thinks it is a bad idea to make it commemorative.
