Member of Parliament for Sagnarigu, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, has questioned the kind of dams being constructed under the government’s ‘one village one dam’ programme at a cost of 2.5 million cedis each.

In his estimation, the supposed dams being constructed in the northern part of Ghana under the programme do not even qualify to be termed as dugouts.

Minister of Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, is reported to have told parliament on Tuesday that the smallest of the dams will cost 2.5 million cedis.

The Sagnarigu MP suspects the government is ripping Ghanaians off.

Speaking Wednesday on TV3 morning magazine show, the New Day, Mr. Fuseini said it is unimaginable the sort of things emerging from the parliamentary debate of the President’s State of the Nation Address delivered to parliament last Thursday.

“Very strange things are happening under this government”, he observed, adding “shocking revelations are coming up to that effect.

“Even yesterday, the Agric Minister, something that cannot even qualify for a dugout … it’s taking over 2 million cedis,” he said, indicating that what is being constructed should not cost more than 50,000 cedis.

“I think there are many other things coming up on the floor of parliament that will shock you” he said.

‘Bloody widow’

Meanwhile, he said there was no basis for some MPs who held placards with the inscription “bloody widow” in parliament during the swearing-in of the newly elected MP for Ayawaso West Waguon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, to have been hauled before the privileges committee.

According to him, there is no law or Standing Orders of Parliament that bars MPs from holding placards in the house.

He insisted that at the time the placards were raised, Ms Seyram Alhassan was not yet sworn-in as an MP and could not have had parliamentary privileges conferred on her.
