Abdul Fatawu recounts best moment at Kotoko

Former Asante Kotoko forward Abdul Fatawu Safiu has recounted his best moment at the Kumasi giants in his one-year stint at the club.

The former Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps man joined the Porcupines from Eleven Wonders in 2018 and shot into prominence in the 2018/19 CAF Confederation Cup where he scored thrice and assisted twice in the competition.

Fans across the world were keen to get some insider information from the star forward and wasted no time in asking him what his the best moment was during his time in Kumasi in a live chat with Daily Porcupines on Facebook.

Taking little time to think, Fatawu immediately made fans feel nostalgic for a certain 2018 CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round 2nd leg game against Kenya’s Kariobangi Sharks at the Baba Yara Stadium.

“I think firstly when they (Kotoko) going to Coton Sports, I didn’t make to the squad but I got my chance in the second game which was against Kariobangi Sharks at Baba Yara Sports Stadium, it wasn’t easy that time. Your first game with this kind of crowd, it was crazy and I wouldn’t know how to describe the feeling but it was amazing,” he said.

“The moment I got my chance I didn’t want to lose my position so I just went in 100% just to secure a place in the team because if you are a Kotoko player and you play one, two games and you perform below par I don’t think you are going to see your jersey again so I got the chance and I took it.”

Asante Kotoko defeated the Kenyan side 2-1 on aggregate in Kumasi after a goalless first leg match in Nairobi. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 17th minute through Abdul Fatawu Safiu who was making his debut for the club and in the African competition dispossessed Geofrey Shiveka, dribbled past a second man and sent a shot into the bottom corner of the near post before the then captain Amos Frimpong fetched the winner.
