The Founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, has threatened to seek court injunction on the upcoming 2020 general elections if the Electoral commission, Ghana (EC) does not compile a new voter register.

He has said the current register is bloated and cannot be used to conduct successful and peaceful elections, hence his insistent call for a new register.

Mr Akpaloo has vehemently averred to legally forbid the EC on carrying out its mandate if the current voter register is not changed and would make sure no one gets the opportunity to contest for the presidential and the parliamentary seats.

He disclosed this to Nana Yaw Opare on the Yensempa morning show on Onua FM, ignoring claims that he has been paid to resist the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other political parties who are against the compilation of a new register.

He rejected assertions that the EC used the current register in conducting last year’s district assembly and unit committee elections, hence its credibility for the December 7 polls.

“I am sending a signal to Ghanaians that if the EC does not compile a new voter register, I will place a court injunction on the 2020 general elections,” he said in local language Twi.

“Oh yes because we have to do the right thing and no one would contest.”

He also reminded all that the EC could not clean the register of all persons who used the National Health Insurance cards to register after the Supreme Court had ordered the Commission to do so in 2016.

Touching on the six newly created regions, Mr. Akpaloo questioned how the EC is going to use the current register in those regions since the law stipulates that every region must have a regional code.

He further explained the Commission can conduct the 2020 elections across the length and breadth of the country only when it compiles a new register, capturing the six new regions.

Mr. Akpaloo thus challenged the position of the NDC against a new voter register, describing their stance as baseless and entreated the general public to massively register when the EC opens for the registration.
