While the NDC has won the seat for four terms, the NPP has won it twice and once by an independent candidate.

Mr. Baba Braimah of the NDC won in 1992 and 1996 respectively.

But in 2000, he was defeated by Abubakari Sadiqque Boniface now MP for Madina who stood as an independent candidate, shutting the latter’s dream of winning the seat for a third term.

In 2004, Boniface Abubakari crossed carpet to NPP and represented the party as its candidate.

He subsequently won the 2004 elections making him the first MP on the ticket of the NPP.

In 2008, Alhaji Ibrahim Dey of the NDC beat Boniface to take the seat from NPP. He won again In 2012.

In 2016, the current MP Adam Salifu Braimah stood on the ticket of the NPP to beat the NDC incumbent MP with 24 votes. Mr. Salifu pulled 12,776 votes to beat his opponent Alhaji Dey who secured 12,726 votes

This the NDC MP contested the results at the high court in Tamale citing over voting as the basis.

The matter was determined by the Tamale High Court which declared Mr. Braimah the winner of the 2016 elections.

In the 2020 NPP parliamentary primary, the MP is going unopposed.

Even though some names popped up in the run up to the picking of nomination, none actually picked nomination.

According to the MP, his unprecedented development is the reason he had no competitor.

“The visible infrastructural development in the constituency and others is the reason for the confidence the party has reposed in me”

He added, the people of Salaga South will give him four more years to do more just as the President will be given four more years to do more.

However, some COVID-19 protocols were missing at the venue.

Meanwhile, delegates at the confirmation ceremony have disregarded covid-19 safety protocols as some were spotted without their nose masks while others did not observe social distancing.

Constituency Secretary Abdulai Habib reacting to this blamed delegates for the situation.
