Coronavirus: Suspend all court sittings with immediate effect - Lawyer to Chief Justice

Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has taken a swipe at the Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah for failing to suspend court sittings and rather directing for only a few numbers of people to come to court.

He was of the view that the Chief Justice should rather suspend all court sitting for two weeks with immediate effect.

According to him, the Chief Justice is exposing them to a high risk of contracting the virus because the court is a public place and that you can’t stop one from entering.

He added that the courts should be suspended, so they can get adequate time and resources to be able to put systems and strategies in place to prevent the spread.

He explained that Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah could ask judges to have case management and bring out urgent cases that need to be dealt with expediently.

Lawyer Ampaw minced no words in stating that the CJ got all wrong by the directive he gave and has asked him to review it.

Seven cases of COVID-19 have so far been recorded in Ghana.

President has issued a directive banning public gatherings including funerals, workshops, political rallies, religious activities and others.

“I have decided in the interest of public safety and the protection of our population to review the public gathering advisories earlier announced as follows: Firstly, all public gatherings including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, sporting events and religious activities, such as services in churches and mosques, have been suspended for the next four (4) weeks,” President Akufo-Addo said in a national address on Sunday, March 15, 2020.
