Deputy General Secretary of Ghana’s biggest opposition party, National Democratic Congress, Peter Boamah Otukonor says the electoral commission is united with the incumbent NPP to undertake a diabolic stunt to retain power.
The electoral commission is set to compile a new voters register.
The National Democratic Congress, some other opposition parties and Civil Society Organizations have insisted that the move will hurt the country.
According to them, the timing for the compilation is wrong considering the fact that the country is going to the polls in December this year.
But the Electoral Commission has insisted compiling a new register is the best for the country because the existing register lacks credibility.
Reacting to the Electoral Commission’s position, Otukonor insists it’s a move by the commission to support the governing NPP to retain power.
He said, “Everything pointed to the fact that the EC, especially its chairperson, Jean Mensa, was clearly in favour of the NPP to retain political power through any means”.
He noted that it’s this same register that brought Akufo-Addo to power and therefore there is no need to compile another register.
He added, “This was the same register that was used for the district assembly elections and the creation of six regions in the country last year”.
