Gov't was paid to shelter Gitmo ex-detainees - Sir John

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, popularly called Sir John, has dismissed President John Mahama's assertion that there are no monetary considerations between the Government of Ghana and the US for the transfer of the Gitmo ex-detainees.

According to him, the President apparently lied to Ghanaians because from sources he quoted on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, the current administration will receive a financial fraction from the US to monitor the two ex-detainees in Ghana.

In his earnest perspective, the government's decision to accommodate them may ruin the fortunes of Ghana because even if the detainees pose low-risk to the nation; their fanatics may not.

“The money is here. It’s with the President. We have received the money to admit them…The President didn’t consider how his decision might affect us,” he said.

He further questioned the compassion of President John Mahama towards his own citizens, asking "what sins have we committed? I don’t understand. It’s as if Ghanaians have committed sin against our President and so, he’s mandated to do only what we don’t like.”

President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday explained in a press briefing that there was no monetary consideration before accepting two Guantanamo Bay ex-detainees to live in the country for the next two years.

He argued that Ghana is a member of the international community and, therefore, is responsible for ensuring that some international challenges are resolved.

This, therefore, informed government's decision to accept the ex-Gitmo detainees.

But to Sir John, President John Mahama and his government appointees are gradually dragging the country into mayhem.
