The Majority Leader Osei-Kyei Mensah Bonsu says it will be suicidal for the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) to allow aspirants to contest him and others in the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries.
Some aspirants, especially in the Ashanti Region are very much unhappy about moves by party executives to protect certain Members f Parliament from being contested.
They claim they’re being frustrated as they’ve been denied access to purchase nomination forms to contest in the primaries ever since nominations opened last Friday.
Some have had to travel down south to Accra in search of the nomination forms.
But the Majority Leader in an interview said the NPP will do itself a great disservice if it allows persons such as himself, the First Deputy Speaker and the Minister of Education to be contested.
“The Majority Leader will not be contested because of what he’s doing for the party and for Parliament. The First Deputy Speaker as well and also the Minister for Education. The practical situation is that because of what they are doing they are not able to find space to visit their constituencies often and because of that, you allow somebody to go and scavenge at the backyard of those people. I think it will be most unfortunate and it will be suicidal for the government.”
The NPP is slated to hold its Parliamentary Primaries on Saturday, April 25, 2020, in constituencies where it has sitting MPs.
