MPs serve their paymasters not their constituents - Lawyer

A private legal practitioner Kwame Adofo has stated that majority of Ghanaian Members of Parliament (MPs) only serve the interests of their paymasters who sponsored their campaigns to the detriment of their constituents.

MPs are mostly criticised for not serving the people who voted for them but rather tend to recoup the monies invested in their campaigns by acquiring mansions and other properties whiles their constituencies lag behind in developments.

Aspiring MPs pay huge sums of monies to delegates just to win seats hence are sometimes requested to pay back the monies borrowed thereby unable to do much for their constituencies as expected of them.

According to him, the aspiring MPs are already compromised at the elections grounds.

They therefore lavish monies on their posters, billboards and other paraphernalia during their campaigns.

Speaking on Ultimate Breakfast Show with Lantam Papanko, Lawyer Adofo observed that aspiring MPs who spend less end up losing the elections whiles those who spend monies win massively.

He observed that delegates mostly milk some of these candidates who borrow monies from their relatives and friends to finance their campaigns.

Lawyer Adofo added that aspiring MPs pay huge sums of monies at their party’s strongholds in order to win more votes.

The private Legal Practitioner said the constituents only tickle themselves that their MPs will seek their interests after voting for them to represent them in Parliament.

Lawyer Adofo said MPs will rather neglect their constituents than to serve jail term for owing their creditors.

‘Look I wouldn’t say they are corrupt as such but compromised, you can’t expect a young man possibly with no house of his own, being able to go to the bank, borrow so much money, fall on relatives, get so much money and get on some other benefactors, sponsors, give them so much money and expect them to go to Parliament and become independent?.

‘Not a chance, from the moment they win the primaries, they are already compromised, in the sense that somebody is holding their balls, saying my brother, I held a bet and this is a lottery game and I have won, now you have to pay back my money, trust me there is no way he won’t give in to the demands of his sponsors …the reality is that they look after themselves,’ he pointed out.
