Anti-corruption campaigner, Paul Collins Appiah Ofori, has disclosed that he has confidence in the Akufo-Addo administration to deal with corruption in the country and even financiers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who engage in corrupt practices may equally not be spared.
“Irrespective of the fact you financed the NPP campaign, once you are engaged in corrupt practices, Martin Amidu will come after you and deal with you. NPP financiers will face Martin Amidu if it is established they are engaged in corrupt practices ”, he warned.
On Tamale-based Diamond Fm, the former lawmaker for Esikuma-Odobin-Brakwa said the appointment of Mr Amidu as the first Special Prosecutor pending parliamentary approval is apt.
“He is fair in the discharge of his duties and his commitment to fighting corruption makes him an asset to the nation. I personally recommended him for the position and I believe the appointment of an NPP person would have made the NDC perceive it an attempt to witch-hunt them”, he disclosed
According to him, he was not surprised Martin Amidu was mentioned saying: “I knew him long ago and I am certain he can help in the government’s quest to fight corruption. I was Intoxicated with joy when he was named because he is the right man to help fight corruption in the corruption”
Contrary to the perception he will haunt past NDC officials, he said the Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice will work in accordance with the laws of the country.
“Martin Amidu will not run after NDC members. He is going to work in accordance with the law. If you are NDC and you looted then he runs after you does it mean he is witch-hunting you? Persons have wreaked havoc on the state coffers and gone free. Persons cited in the auditor’s report since the inception of the fourth republic have always been left off the hook. None has been prosecuted”. He stated.
He is of the view that if a single person among such persons had been prosecuted it will be put an end to the wanton dissipation of state funds by public office holders.
“Regardless of one’s political affiliation, anyone culpable of causing financial loss to the state must be dealt with. At least it will put a seal cap to acts of corruption in public offices. Much of his work will also be dependent on the Auditor General’s report”, the outspoken former lawmaker stressed.
