The Minister of Works and Housing, Samuel Atta-Akyea stated that drastic efforts are underway to mitigate perennial flooding in the country.
He explained that response-oriented measures are in place to attract investments into the drainage and sewage sub-sectors of the country in order to address the associated problems.
Appearing before parliament today [Thursday], he disclosed the World Bank has responded favourably to the call of the Ministry and is currently supporting the Greater Accra Climate Risk Integrated Drainage (GARID) Project to mitigate drainage and related problems within the Odaw basin.
The minister cited poor waste management – both solid and liquid, building and construction on water-ways among others as the course of flooding in the country.
As much, the minister caution all to desist from the culture of dumping garbage into the drain.
The upshot is that this subculture chokes the open drain, the mass of water runs off and translated into flooding.
Until we destroy this subculture, the situation that eats our meagre budget will persist.
This the Minister for Works and Housing responded on the floor of Parliament to the ministry’s preparedness in permanently fixing the drainage and sewage challenges faced by the country.
