‘NDC will sign vigilantism code of conduct if Akufo-Addo joins’ – Akamba

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said until a Government official signs the Peace council’s document on vigilantism on behalf of the Government of Ghana, they will not sign.

This comes after the NDC’s representative, Alex Segbefia, declined to sign the vigilantism document despite several attempts by the Peace Council Chairman to convince him to do so.

The National Organiser of the NDC, Joshua Hamidu Akamba, who revealed this an interview with Piesie Okrah on Power 97.9 FM Wednesday, said the Akufo-Addo led administration has not demonstrated enough committment to ending political vigilantism.

“It will be premature for us (NDC) to sign the document when the government has not signed it… The government-sponsored its NPP vigilante groups and gave them police vehicles to shoot innocent citizens during the Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-elections so the government has a stake in this,” he said.

Mr Akamba noted that the NDC suggested the involvement of the National Peace Council in the vigilantism discussion hence they cannot play mischief with the issue by refusing to sign the document as bandied by some NPP propagandists.

“Why is the NPP and Akufo-Addo trying very hard to tie the NDC to sign this without the government showing committment to sign the document? the Interior Minister is a government official and he can sign on behalf of the government so that when a state institution sponsors people to cause mayhem like what happened in Ayawaso, who will the law deal with? We want peace in this country and that is why we say the government should sign it,” Akamba explained.

He added the roadmap assigns responsibilities to various agencies so those agencies should honour the invitation to make way for the NDC to sign the treaty.

Meanwhile, the opposition NPP represented by its general secretary John Boadu signed the document.
