Francis Kwame Adabor, Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East (NPP) and Chairman Lands and Forest Committee of Parliament, has said the current voters register is unfit for the elections this year.
He explained on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM Tuesday May 19 that the register is bloated and has other flaws hence must be replaced with a new one.
“As for a new register it is must,” he said, adding that it is bloated.
Meanwhile a Former Member of Parliament for Madina, Amadu Sorogo, has said the current identity card being issued by the National identification Authority (NIA), cannot be described as a Ghana Card which is limited to only Ghanaians.
According to him, the card is an ECOWAS Identity Card which has been translated into the French language for all French speaking people.
He has therefore informed the Electoral Commission that it cannot rely on that card for purposes of voters registration exercise.
Speaking on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM Tuesday May 19, in connection with the plans of the EC to compile a new voters registration using passports and the NIA’ s card as the primary source of identification, Mr. Sorogo said the primary document for identity in Ghana is the birth certificate.
“Birth certificate is the primary authority to tell that one is a Ghanaian and so why do we want to deceive ourselves?
The card being issued by the NIA is not a Ghana Card, we don’t have Ghana Card, what they are issuing is called ECOWAS identity card.”
