PLO Lumumba Foundation urges Ghanaians to ponder over words of Dr Kwame Nkrumah

Ghanaians have been urged to deeply ponder over words of Dr Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, the first Prime Minister and President of Ghana as the nation marks its 62nd Independence day today.

The PLO Lumumba Foundation, Ghana Chapter, celebrates the 62nd Independence Day of Ghana together with other institutions, agencies, Civil Society Organizations and most importantly political stakeholders who have help shaped the political history of Ghana prior to her independence.

Today, the 6th of March 2019 is a significant day in Ghana`s history. History has it that there was great joy and expectation, a quenchless desire in the hearts of the people as the great Pan Africanist, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declared the independence of Ghana on the eve of 6th of March, 1957.

As we are celebrating our independence as a nation from the colonial rule, it is crucial to ponder over the statement by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah” …the black man is capable of managing his own affairs”. Ghana has come a long way since the green light was given to manage her own affairs.

But the question we must ask ourselves is, are we really managing our own affairs? Are we truly independent?

The PLO Lumumba Foundation, Ghana Chapter therefore recognizes the celebration of Ghana`s independence day by taking inspiration from a speech delivered by Prof. PLO Lumumba during the 3rd African Convention of Principals in Kenya, 2004, “Has Ghana changed? Or has Ghana been engaged in change without change?

If we want to know whether or not we have changed, it behooves us to compare ourselves with our independence age mates and ask ourselves whether we have known growth or we merely have the trappings of growth.

Most of the stories that we tell our children are horror stories because 62 years after independence there are many things that we ought to have done that we have not done.”

Ghana as the first African country to gain independence from colonial rule must carve a new path towards total liberation and emancipation which will worth emulating by other African countries. Ghana is capable of managing her own affairs. God bless Ghana.
