Pressure mounts on Kotoko chief Kwame Kyei over disastrous handling of Clottey transfer issues

Pressure is mounting on Dr Kwame Kyei to resign or be sacked by Kotoko owner the Asantehene as the Executive Chairman has refused to answer the calls of his predecessor over the avoidable looming FIFA-ordered relegation.

This comes after another former executive of the club Edmund Ackah also revealed that Dr Kyei refused to heed to the advice of pursuing the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) route to avoid the $240,000 fined slapped on the Ghanaian giants over the transfer of Emmanuel Clottey.

Kyei's predecessor Samuel Opoku Nti says his attempts to reach out to the Executive Chairman over the issue hit the brick wall with the current leader of the team refusing to pick his calls to discuss way of avoiding the fine or Kotoko's relegation from the Ghanaian top-flight.

With this evidence, supporter groups of the club are calling for the quick-tempered Kwame Kyei to be sacked by the Asantehene for running a one-man show by antagonizing former management members of the team while fighting executives of the club who disagree with his dictatorial management style.

Former Kotoko general manager Opoku Nti says he sent a comprehensive handing over notes to Kwame Kyei detailing the Clottey issue and how they could avoid the fine and a possible ban.

However, Kwame Kyei refused to carry out the recommendations of the man in charge of the club between 2014 and 2017 and subsequently refused to pick his phone calls as the issues came to the fore.

"It’s mandatory for any outgoing management to do a handing over to incoming administration so I did as it is,” Opoku Nti told Nhyira FM in Kumasi.

"George Kennedy and I did the handing over notes to Dr. Kyei. Clottey’s issue was part including Dr. Kwaku Frimpong’s debt.

"I will be disappointed to hear from Dr. Kwame Kyei saying he wasn’t aware of Clottey’s issue. Dr. Kyei never called me on the phone before.

"There are a few times I tried calling him but with no answer. I think he doesn’t have my number that’s why.”

Recently resigned management member Ackah also revealed that Kyei's was recalcitrant over the ways of dealing with the Clottey issue insisting the huge debt is self-inflicted.

"If Dr. Kwame Kyei had listened to management members on the Clottey issues, Kotoko wouldn't be paying this huge amount," Ackah told Oyerepa FM.

"I'm no longer in management but I trust the rest that they can do the job, they are more than capable but if only he (Dr. Kwame Kyei) will listen.

"In August 2019, Esperance wrote to Kotoko giving us their account details to pay them $30,000 because we owe them $180,000 and they also owe us $150,000 but the chairman said he will not pay because he didn't sign Emmanuel Clottey."

With this information on how Dr Kyei refused to listen to advice on how to progress with matters of the club fed-up supporters have called him to be replaced with one supporter group in Kumasi saying they can take over the running of the club.

Asante Kotoko have been ordered to make full payment of $180,000 fee to the Tunisian giants regarding Emmanuel Clottey’s transfer.

The Porcupine Warriors have been told to fork out $45,000 as interest to the Blood and Gold outfit, and also an additional $15,000 to the committee that sat on the case.

The Kumasi-based giants have been instructed to pay in full the amount within a month.

It would be recalled that Asante Kotoko in 2015 announced the signing of Emmanuel Clottey, yet the player still had a contractual obligation with the Tunisian giants.

Clottey, a former Great Olympics and Berekum Chelsea striker, signed for Asante Kotoko in 2015 but would soon have his status challenged at the world football governing body, FIFA, by Esperance, who claimed to have a running contract with the player at the time he signed for the Porcupines

FIFA slapped a $180,000 fine on Emmanuel Clottey for a breach of contract, but it has since remained a legal tussle between Esperance and Asante Kotoko, because Emmanuel Clottey prayed to an Accra High Court in 2019 to compel the Porcupine Warriors to settle the fine imposed on him by FIFA.

Meanwhile, Esperance have refused to pay the transfer fee for Kwame Bonsu which the club and the player should be getting around $250,000.
