Former Black Stars player, Sam Johnson says there is no need for footballers who are out of contract with a club to go in for a floating status from the Player Status Committee before being declared as a free agent.

According to Johnson, the perennial problems of footballers being enslaved by contracts they sign still persist around the world in even in the domestic league in Ghana with no one standing up for the rights of the footballer, especially the illiterate ones.

In an interview with the Kumasi based Akoma FM, he said "We have always been talking about players and their contracts continuously but what I have realized is that no one speaks favourably for the players each time it comes up."

"If I get the chance, I will ask them that If as a player, I have a contract with you and it expires why should I go for a floating status before I can leave the team?"

He further added that, left to him alone these things will not happen as players without binding contracts should leave without reporting to any authority in the Ghana Football Association.

"Why should those things happen? I have a contract and it expires with my club, why should I go before some committee before I can be declared a free agent?"

"I need to go to any club of my choice and don’t have to go before any committee but they will tell you go here; you must have this before you can leave, I don’t understand that stress players go through here in Ghana." he added.

Sam Johnson made 45 national team appearance for the Black Stars of Ghana from 1994 to 2003.
