The General Secretary of the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG), Mr Richard Kofi Jordan, has been released from police custody following his arrest on Monday, 3 June 2019.

Mr Jordan was arrested for alleged tax evasion.

The mortuary workers have been on strike for some days now in demand for better conditions of work.

The strike is having a biting toll on the families of the deceased since they are unable to deposit or retrieve the bodies of their loved ones at the morgues.

Speaking to Class News, the lawyer for the workers, Mr Kingsley Kwasitsu described the arrest as an intimidatory tactic being employed by the government.

He said: “In my experience, this is the first time the police have invited or appears to be interfering in a strike.

“The government of the day controls the police and it’s just clear that it is the government that has asked the police to do what they can do about it because if the security minister invited him and he went, one would have thought that he and the General Secretary and members of MOWAG will be talking about the matter and not he being handed over to the police as if he has committed a crime. So, this is intimidating.”
